Middle School
The Hackley Middle School educates 230 students in grades five through eight. Completed in 2005, the Saperstein Middle School building and the adjoining science building allow our Middle School students to enjoy state-of-the-art facilities for all of their classes including dedicated Middle School spaces for music, art, drama, technology, and dining.
With an average class size of 15-16 students, personal contact between students and teachers is frequent; in fact, students meet with their faculty advisors on a daily basis. Field trips, assemblies, extracurricular programs, team sports, community service activities, and social events in the Middle School further educate our students and foster a greater sense of camaraderie. Hackley recognizes and supports the zest, playfulness, and energy of the early adolescent, and believes that these qualities are compatible with serious academic endeavor.
The Middle School utilizes a two-tiered program. Fifth and sixth graders meet in homeroom-based classes, while seventh and eight graders enjoy individually scheduled classes and a wider array of extracurricular and social activities and a somewhat longer school day. This program allows us to provide a challenging, stimulating and age-appropriate education for students during these critical years of development.
The Middle School faculty expects our early adolescents to work within the framework of a traditional academic program. English, mathematics and history courses are taught at advanced levels; while emphasis on the sciences assume and the study of foreign languages expands. “Specials” classes are offered in music, art, drama, health, and technology. As a result of these greater expectations, the workload increases and becomes more demanding.
