Community Service in the Middle School

This year, the Middle School welcomes Preetha Chakrabarti (Middle School Science teacher) as its new Community Service coordinator for the Middle School, taking the reins from Angela Ashley-Holland, who started the program and built it over recent years into the vital and expansive program we enjoy today.

The goal of Hackley Helping Hands, the Middle School Community Service Program, is to instill in our students an awareness of and sensitivity toward the world beyond their home and school environment, as well as an inner strength resulting from their character development. The program provides a variety of projects and activities, both during the school day and after hours, with the hope that every student will get involved in some way that appeals to him or her. The activities range from volunteering at local hospitals and soup kitchens, participating in bike and walk-a-thons, to having dress down days to raise money for worthy projects and organizations.

We hope to expand the program over the next few years, so as to cover an even greater demographic, and effectively serve diverse communities. The Middle School hopes to continue working with the Lower and Upper School Community Service efforts, when appropriate, using Community Service as a common theme. Finally, with the fifth grade joining the Middle School and a new building on the way, we expect that the Community Service Program will play a vital role in uniting the students in grades 5-8.
