Community Service in Hackley's Upper School

The Community Service Committee at Hackley strives to achieve the goals of the school’s philosophy: the growth of character and responsibility in those students who do volunteer work, the commitment of energy, time and imagination to community service, and the acquisition of an appreciation for the society outside the walls of Hackley—a complex community of people, cultures, institutions and needs.

The Committee consists of student leaders who are responsible for organizing and coordinating projects, and creating student involvement in these projects.

If you are interested in more information regarding Community Service, please contact faculty advisor,
Mr. Shachar Link, at slink@hackleyschool.org.

Community Service Fundraising

For a number of years, the Hackley community has promoted several fundraising events to raise money for various worthy causes. The effect of this has been that, throughout the school year, we have been asking our students and parents to make multiple monetary contributions to these causes, sometimes, in close succession. Our parents and students have always been generous and have supported our fundraising efforts, but we are conscious of the financial strain that this may have on some families.

This year, we will emphasize a more hands-on approach to service, i.e. sending out our students to work directly with the community around us. To the extent fundraising is coupled with community service, it needs to have a direct link to such hands-on work. Thus, in order to limit the frequent appeals to our parents and students, and to re-center community service on face-to-face student involvement, we have decided to limit fundraising to one single cause per year. Our students’ hands-on work with many organizations will continue, as always.

This year we are pleased to announce that Midnight Run will be the fundraising project in the Upper School. We believe that Midnight Run is a good choice because it combines real world experience with fundraising that supplements the work our students do.
