Isabella Fauber ‘23

I am studying systemic lupus erythematosus and antiphospholipid syndrome, two autoimmune disorders, and how we can utilize the gut microbiome to understand the pathogenesis of such diseases and how we can treat them.

Why did you pursue this project?
My name is Isabella Fauber, and I am a junior here at Hackley School. I play soccer on Hackley’s Varsity Soccer team as well as on a club team. I am also the co-founder of Hackley Medical Club and the co-founder of Hackley Fashion and Design. I became interested in autoimmune research after a family member was diagnosed with Sjögren’s Syndrome after being misdiagnosed with lupus for years. I was determined to find a way to help them so I began researching autoimmune disorders on my own, and then when I became a freshman I applied for the Independent Science Research Program to cultivate my research skills. Last summer, I interned at the Hospital for Special Surgery to research how the microbiome impacts Antiphospholipid Syndrome and wrote a paper alongside my mentors intended for patient use. My research has now evolved into how the microbiome impacts Systemic Lupus Erythematosus. This summer, I will spend two months in Germany working at a lab at the University of Munster alongside my mentor to continue my research.
