About Hackley
Diversity
“Enter Here To Be and Find a Friend”

These words are engraved over the main entrance of Hackley School. This unofficial motto is integral to Hackley’s educational mission, in which we desire to learn about and embrace our differences and perspectives, encourage healthy debate, and foster an atmosphere of mutual respect.

As friends, we support, stimulate, and challenge each other daily – in the classroom and on the stage, in the hallway and dining room, in the library and studio, on the playground and sport’s fields.

We represent diversity of race, gender identity, national origin, economic class, ethnicity, learning style, sexual identity, political view, religion, family structure, and talent.  Iuncti iuvamus, Hackley’s official motto, reflects who we are as a community – “united we help one another”.

As Diversity Coordinators, we work to unite the different parts of the Hackley community – students, faculty, staff, parents, Board of Trustees, and alumni – so that we are able to help one another navigate our diverse world.

Through programming, committee work, discussion groups, training at conferences and workshops, curriculum, and hallway and classroom displays, we educate ourselves about our differences and ensure that each of us sees him or herself reflected throughout our community.

We encourage each other to be self-reflective and acquire the skills to confront prejudices, biases and inequities; we strive to become responsible citizens of our multicultural society.

In the words of Headmaster Walter Johnson, “Diversity is fundamental to our understanding of what good education is and one of the hallmarks of our community’s culture.”
