On Monday, March 10, the middle school was transformed into a living learning laboratory. Students spent the day immersed in all things South African, getting a hands-on understanding of just about everything imaginable in this fascinating, inspiring and complex country. Guided by the six pillars of Young Round Square, Hackley middle school students, teachers and invited guests were transported to South Africa on Monday. Highlights of the experience included…
  • Student-produced learning in roving “museum-style” presentations, covering all six of the Young Round Square Pillars: Internationalism, Democracy, Environmentalism, Adventure, Leadership and Service.
  • Students lead workshops on Nelson Mandela, endangered wildlife species and cultural diversity.
  • The debate team debated whether it is ever justified to use violence to overthrow an unjust government if other means have failed.
  • And we made friendship bracelets that will be hand delivered to the students of a township school in South Africa by our four travelers when they go to the Young Round Square Conference in South Africa this May.
A highlight of the day was hosting Sharon Katz and the Peace Train — straight from South Africa — for workshops, music, dance and song. Learn more about Sharon’s incredible and inspiring role in bringing voices from all ethnic groups together during the transition to democracy in South Africa here: http://www.sharonkatz.com.

A beautifully decorated Saperstein middle school building, draped in South African colors, flags and balloons.South African games and activities during our breaks and South African snacks and treats during the day.

A enormous thanks to everyone involved in planning the day — Brad Walters, Melissa Boviero, the student presenters, the supporting teachers, and HPA representatives Rhea Mallet and Priya Krishna!
