“Exuberance Personified: Joan Fox”

Hackley Mathematics Teacher 1996 – 2007

This is the third in a series of profiles of Hackley teachers who have been awarded endowed Chairs. Joan Fox, this past year’s Lower School Math Coordinator, 4th grade math teacher, and geometry teacher, retired this June after 11 years of teaching on the Hilltop.

From 2006-2007 Joan held The Parents’ Chair, formerly held by Kirsten Karlsrud (1999-2002) and John Leistler (2002-2005). Endowed by the Hackley Parents’ Association in 1999, The Parents’ Chair is awarded for a three-year term to a faculty member who fosters intellectual curiosity and a love of learning, motivates and encourages students, demonstrates creative and effective teaching, and offers students counsel and mentoring both in and outside the classroom. The Chair rotates among the Lower, Middle and Upper divisions.

"The Beauty of Math: Doug Clark"
Hackley Mathematics Teacher Since 1980
Chair, Mathematics Department 1990-1998

This is the first in a series of profiles of Hackley teachers who have been awarded endowed Chairs. Doug Clark, The Wallace W. McLean Chair for Mathematics and Science, has held his Chair since 1990—longer than any other chair holder—and is therefore the first teacher profiled. Gerry Murphy, former Chair of the Math Department, held the McLean Chair prior to Doug.
