Hackley School
Last May, the Varsity Baseball team welcomed Major League Baseball scout Sean Moran to the Hilltop. Moran, a longtime friend and former player of Coach Jim McVeigh, currently serves as the Northeast Regional Crosschecker and Special Assignment Scout for the St. Louis Cardinals organization.

While in the area scouting local talent, Moran took time to speak with Hackley student-athletes, offering valuable insight into what professional organizations look for beyond raw athletic ability.
“Outside of obvious talent, the most important things we look for are how players handle failure and whether they are good teammates,” Moran explained.
He went on to describe the importance of mental toughness and character in professional baseball.
“Every player fails at some point, but not all players handle failure the same way,” Moran said. “Some players implode and compound the problem, while others use failure as motivation to elevate their game. We also look closely at whether a player will fit well within an organization. Is he a good clubhouse guy? Will he get along with teammates over a 162-game season, day in and day out? Those intangibles often separate the players who make it from those who do not.”
Although his visit was brief, Moran’s message left a lasting impression on the Hackley players, reinforcing the importance of resilience, leadership, and teamwork both on and off the field.
