Into the Woods for Research

Hackley Upper School Advanced Forest Ecology Research students set off to Teatown on a rainy Tuesday morning in January to study the winter forest. Read on.
The day started with a downpour, but the weather cleared -- and the sun even peaked out. The class started the day by taking a tour of the birds, and then participated in a scavenger hunt around the lake. They found several squirrel dreys, sapsucker holes, an abandoned beaver lodge, and an old red vireo nest, to name a few of their discoveries. After a quick lunch, they took the Wildlife of the Hudson Valley class. The favorite animal by far was the Virginia opossum, followed closely by the beautiful diamond back terrapin. All were ready for a nap on the bus ride home!
