Girls Squash Solid in Rebuilding Year

The Hackley Girls Squash Team performed well in a rebuilding year, benefiting from many new faces and a new facility which inspired some great squash.
The Girls Varsity Squash Team started the season in mixed spirits. With the loss of 50% of last year’s starting line-up, all players moved up into new positions and on-campus recruitment pulled in Leah Holmes ‘20, Maggie Broaddus ’20 and Leah McKirgan ‘20. The school also welcomed new girls Head Coach Phil Wilkins to help spear-head the 2017/18 season. With the installment and a new outlook of the game, the girls first match of the season was a convincing 6-1 win over the Holy Child. The month of December saw the team put forth valiant efforts, but were met by better opposition on the day.

The month of January saw the girls move into the new Johnson Center athletic facility and take the next four matches with four straight wins over Riverdale, Briarcliff, The Holy Child and the Masters School. With Nationals lurking on the horizon, the girls team went 1-2 for the final three matches of January with losses to The Greenwich Academy, and Rye High School, and the win coming on the road against conference rival Riverdale.

Nationals were held in Philadelphia where the girls lost a close encounter with Rye Country Day in the first round. All matches went to four or five games, with wins coming from Megan Chen ’18 and Gainsley Korengold ’21 in a close 5-2 loss.

The next match saw a phenomenal team effort against Baldwin JV, with the team losing a nail-biting 4-3. Megan Chen and Gainsley Korengold both turned in solid wins at the number 1 and 2 spot, and sophomore Maggie Broaddus came back from 2-0 down to win in 5 games at the number 7 spot.

The final two matches on the final day saw Hackley lose 5-2 against Roland Park Country Day, and in the afternoon session Hackley stormed back to win 4-3 against St. Lukes JV. Wins from Eleanor Arnold ‘18, Lucia Yannuzzi ‘18, and Leah Holmes, and Margret Broaddus secured a 4-3 win to wrap up the 2017/2018 Nationals.

The girls overall season record was 7-8.
