Hackley Boys Varsity Lacrosse

The 2018 Hackley Boys Lacrosse Team had an outstanding year, finishing 15-2, winning the NYSAIS Championship, and sharing the Ivy Prep League Title with Fieldston, the team it defeated in the NYSAIS Final. Read on.

The 2018 team was led by eight seniors who all played JV together in the 2014 season, Hackley began the season with two weeks of preseason in tough conditions, frequently practicing inside because of the weather. A successful scrimmage / joint practice with Westlake finished off the first stage of the preseason. The team then spent March 19 - 24th in St.Pete’s Beach, Florida, with 3D Lacrosse. A mix of JV and varsity players made the trip for the two-a-day practices and games, continuing the successful tradition of older player mentoring younger players during the preseason. The team had four scrimmages and another fishing derby outing to Ft. DeSoto State park beach, developing their skills and bonding as a unit.

The team’s regular season was a great success, marred only by close overtime losses to Fieldston (11-10) and Stepinac (8-7). The overtime losses were redeemed in the NYSAIS Semi-Final where it beat a tough Riverdale team for the third time in the season, 9-8 in double overtime on a goal by freshman James Hirschberg with 22 seconds left in the period. This set the stage for the squad’s best game of the season in the NYSAIS final where they overcame an early 1-0 deficit to dominate the game, winning 12-7 and securing the school’s 5th NYSAIS title, its second in three years. The Ivy Prep title was Hackley’s third consecutive title, and its 8th in 9 years (2010-14 and 2016 -18).

Individual players also had great years. Seniors Chad Lasseter, Bobby Hite, Spencer Diaz and Will Waterhouse were first team All-Ivy. Will won despite tearing his ACL and MCL in the final regular season game. Freshman James Hirschberg was 2nd team. Bobby was an All American, Chad an Academic All American, and senior Michael Mezzacappa was the NYSAIS area Bob Scott award winner.
