It's Busy in the Makerspace!

The end of the school year has included a variety of projects across our curricula, all using the resources of this great space. From Grade 6 Science to Computer 7, Acccellerated AB/BC Calculus, Senior Projects and Latin, Hackley students and teachers keep finding great ways to expand their learning in the Makerspace.
Grade 6 Science - The Ocean Creature Project
Ms. Boviero’s and Mr. McElroy’s 6th graders were asked to research a specific zone found on earth, learning of its unique qualities and how ocean life had adapted to that zone through evolutionary changes. For their project, students were to required create their own ocean creature with the characteristics needed to exist in their specific zone, and report on their unique creation.

Computer 7
Throughout the trimester Mr. Dioguardi’s and Mr. Tusch’s 7th graders learned more about programming concepts, and were asked to adapt and apply these concepts to the physical world by programming the Micro:bit - a mini processor that includes an accelerometer, temperature and magnetometer sensors, Bluetooth and USB connectivity. Pictured here is a project that asks students to create either a structure or an object out of cardboard, that has at least one interactive element or a moving part, and that is powered by the Micro:bit.

Accelerated Calculus AB/BC
In calculus students learn how to compute the volume of solids of revolution and solids with a known cross section. These figures are hard to visualize in two dimensions, so Ms. Kaplan’s AB/BC Calculus class is making three dimensional models of these figures. They will then compute the theoretical volume using Calculus and then compute the volume of the solid that they created. They will then check and find the percent error.

Senior Projects
Two seniors, Ariana Kyimpopkin and Daniel Bileca have been using the Hackery as a space to build out their senior projects. Daniel has been working with Mr. Aaron Washington, designing and building a pair of high-end audio speakers, including the wooden cases and all of the electronics. Ariana has taken the plans for a full size skiff, (boat), made all of the calculations necessary to scale it down, cut, sanded, and shaped all of the wood pieces both big and small, and assembled a table ⅓ sized replica that is approximately 4 foot long.

Latin III - Mosaics
Ms. DeSantis’ Latin III class recreated an experience from the ancient world through their Mosaic project. Latin III students have studied the artistic elements of ancient mosaics and using backerboards, some mathematics, ceramic tiles and nippers, embarked on a project to create their own mosaic borders, often referred to as double guilloche, in the style of the Ancient Romans.
