Exploring the "Healthy Plate"

1M went up to the Johnson Center for Health and Wellness to make pizza as part of their Social Studies Healthy Plate unit (wait...how is pizza a healthy plate??)
During the healthy plate unit, first graders learn about the five food groups that should be on their plates- grains, fruits, vegetables, proteins and dairy. 1M was able to incorporate 4/5 aspects of a healthy plate into their pizza! Grains was the dough, sauce was a fruit (YES tomatoes technically are fruits), cheese was dairy and we had vegetables and fruits- mushrooms, onions, peppers and sun-dried tomatoes as toppings. Some added lettuce and spinach after the pizza was cooked.

For protein, 1M discussed that we could add chicken, peperoni, sausage or beans. We also discussed how whole wheat flour is healthier than white flour as is the low-fat mozzarella we were using. They were able to connect the low-fat mozzarella to the low-fat milk they often drink at lunch. The pizzas were delicious!
