Employee Wellness: Knitting Together

As we frequently highlight, "wellness" comes in many forms: physical, emotional, cognitive, spiritual, and social, and Hackley employees are engaging in many forms -- including finding cognitive, social, and emotional gratification through needlework!
On Monday afternoons, Upper School English teacher Anne Siviglia leads colleauges in various forms of needlework -- including crocheting, knitting, and needlepoint. Participants learn and expand their skill base (cognitive), enjoy the company of friends (social), and feel proud of what they accomplish (emotional).

For Kim Cummings, a member of our Admissions office, whose recently completed blanket is shown here, it has been all those things and more, including a special and personal form of emotional gratification.  She tells us, "After losing my grandparents within months of each other we were cleaning out their apartment and I found an unfinished blanket that she had been working on for one of her great grandchildren. At the time I didn’t know how to crochet but wanted to learn so I could finish it. That is when Anne’s class came on my radar. I am at the point where I can confidently finish her blanket now that I know how to distinguish the stiches she used. I don’t know which great grandchild she was making it for but I at least now have the ability to finish it for her".
