Ilyasah Shabazz '79 Returns to the Hilltop
On February 7, 2019, author, activist, and alumna, Ilyasah Shabazz ’79, returned to the Hilltop to speak with Hackley Middle School students, all of whom read her book, Betty Before X, last summer.
The event was part of the Middle School’s Pillars Project Day - A Celebration of Leadership. In addition to welcoming Ilyasah, students turned Allen Memorial Hall into an inspiring Women in Leadership Museum, with presentations, posters, photos, music, and more about inspiring women in arts, music, politics, science, literature, athletics, and math. Students also attended workshops with lots of educational activities, including knitting, debate, drumming, quilting, theater read-aloud, cooking, leadership, and the history of the Civil Rights Movement.
