Girls Basketball Exceeds Expectations with Breakout Season

The team came together during the Coaches vs Cancer game and came out on top after a stellar defensive performance by Zoe Naughton ‘19 holding Maria Regina’s best player far below her average. In the opening round game of the NYSAIS playoffs versus our crosstown rival Rye Country Day School, the team gutted out an exciting win after being down by eight points at halftime. We ended up winning by nine and holding Rye Country Day to only 10 second half points.

The senior class played a huge role in the team’s success. Jordan Wade was an offensive force averaged 14 points per game and shooting 76% from the free-throw line. Isabelle Thomas was dominate on the boards and ended up averaging 6 rebounds per game to go along with six points per game. Ismene Germanakos ran the point and also chipped in six points per game while often stepping up to defend the opponents better players. Zoe Naughton and Tatiana Monteleone were strong defensively and highly versatile, always ready and willing to step into whatever role the team needed.

Returning players will have big shoes to fill but are more than capable of continuing the upward trajectory of the program. Sofia Graziano ’20 and Dylan Wade ’20 will fill some of the scoring punch in the backcourt, complemented by forwards Jenny Canoni ’20, Lauren Ahearn ’20 and Isabella Monteleone ’21. Annabel Ives ’20 will also be one of the guards who likes to shoot and has improved tremendously on defense. Eighth graders Welyn Waterhouse and Sophia Petriello will be a force to be reckoned with next year and in the years to come. It is also worth noting that Shira Meer ‘21, who was injured all season, showed up to all games and practices providing enthusiastic moral support.
