Hackley Swimming Finishes Start of New Era on Upswing

The 2018-2019 season has been a year of growth and learning, for Hackley swimmers and coaches. Following the nearly 30 year reign of coaching excellence from Coach Gillard, this year saw a new trio of coaches at the helm: Anne Budlong, Mike Ruggiero, and Jeremy Storm, in addition to practicing and competing in the new JCHW pool.
It was a busy meet schedule with several league meets (Horace Mann, Dalton, Fieldston, Riverdale, Brooklyn Poly Prep, Trinity), as well as some non-conference meets (Brunswick, Greenwich Academy, Holy Child, Kennedy, Masters School). The Boys finished with a 4-7 record, and the Girls were 5-7. While the team hopes to improve upon our overall record in the coming seasons, it will be hard to improve upon the effort, dedication, and attitude of the swimmers.

The Hackley finished off the season with a very exciting and successful series of races at the Ivy League Championships. Facing an extremely competitive field, the Girl’s team finished third, and the Boy’s team finished fourth.

Throughout the course of this two day competition, Hackley Swimmers swam 52 lifetime bests. In addition to so many personal best times, Hackley swimmers were competitive with their peers, with many finishing in the top five at championships. Ivy Championships were claimed by Mary Rotenberg ’21 in the 100 Backstroke and Aidan Wilson ’20 in the 500 Free. At the Independent School Championship meet Aidan won both the 200 and 500 Free and tied Bruce Dunbar’s Hackley record from 1985 in the 500 Free with a time of 4:34.61. In addition, Mary won the 100 Back and joined Kaitlyn Qu ’22, Grace Park ’22 and Brooke Lopez- Ryan ’22 in getting the silver in the 200 IM Relay.

Congratulations in particular to the swimmers competing in their last Ivy League Championships: seniors Olivia Curran, Cristina Paz, Kyle Spencer, and Aidan Wilson.
