Game On!

On Saturday, March 9th, Hackley School, in conjunction with HMGS (Historical Miniature Gaming Society), ran its second annual Mega-Game in the Chapel.
This year’s game, hosted by Dr. John Manning, Roland Fricke, and Jared Fishman, focused on the Battle of Peleliu, September 1944. 14 students took part in the event. The battle simulated a beach landing pitting US Marines against Japanese defenders. While the players and GMS all had a wonderful time, the day was fairly somber in many ways, and it was more than once where a student uttered something along the lines of, “I can’t imagine what this must have been like in real life.” This led to a number conversations led by the various historians in the room, helping to build both understanding and empathy with the players. The debrief itself was led by Dr. Manning, who along with Roland, spent the past year researching the battle and building the board. It was an exceptionally worthwhile day, with a number of students claiming that the discussions were just as critical as the game itself. Planning is already underway for next year!
