Exploring Project-Based Learning in Second Grade

In Social Studies, the Second Grade have been traveling around the world, learning about various countries and their rich cultures and the students have been intrigued by how different life can be.
In an effort to instill a sense of global awareness, a global mindset, and global citizenship, in an increasingly interconnected world, we strive to expose the students to a variety of cultures with an engaging approach that reaches their hearts and minds.

Students were immersed in a variety of project based group activities. They utilized our Lower School databases, to create e-books, slideshow presentations on animals of the rain forest, and even commercials inviting their fellow classmates to visit a distant country of their choice. Throughout their studies, students continuously created crafts that represented specific countries within a continent, which they have displayed throughout the school year in the 2nd grade hallways.

The entire 2nd grade will end the year with a culminating collaborative project on the Great Barrier Reef. Students will apply the skills they have acquired to gain a deeper understanding of the importance of sustainability in protecting our environment and the future of ecosystems.

Short of a visa and passport in hand, the students were thrilled with the exposure and experiences of exploring the world beyond the boundaries of their Hackley classroom. We look forward to a summer filled with adventure and travels near or far.
