MS Aquabots Triumph!

On May 11th, Hackley’s Aquabots competed in the Marine Advanced Technology and Engineering, or MATE, Regional Competition at Villanova University.
The Hackley Aquabots is comprised of the 7th grade "Whirlpool" team  and the 8th grade "HACKERS" team. The MATE competition, which is open to middle school and high school students throughout the Northeast United States, and involves having students design and build a submersible ROV. These ROVs are then used in a pool to complete missions that mimic how submersible ROVs are used in real life. This year’s theme was the use of ROVs in Lakes, Rivers and Dams. Part of the missions involved having the ROVs repair a broken dam, as well as gathering information about the health of the body of water that was being used.

This year, in the “Product Demonstration” portion of the competition, which involves the driving of the ROVs in the pool to complete the mission tasks, both teams scored a Hackley record number of points in this category. Between the advanced ROVs components that were researched and purchased by each team, the savvy programming and building done by the students, and time in the pool where students were able to practice their driving of the ROVs, both teams racked up several points and saw success in this category! Congratulations to both our teams!

Also, our 8th grade team won the “Safety Award” for demonstrating knowledge and practices in engineering safety. This award is one of the most competitive awards to receive at the MATE competition. Congratulations to HACKERS on receiving this recognition, and congratulations to all the Aquabots on representing themselves and Hackley proudly!
