MS Debate Concludes Strong Season

For the fourth time in five years, Hackley had an undefeated team in the finals of the MSPDP Championship year end debate tournament and, for the third time over that span, Hackley won the Championship, its first since 2016.
After going 5-0 in the preliminary rounds, 8th graders Akshi K., Zara H., and Ella R. won the finals in a public debate, defeating a team from Nightingale-Bamford on the motion: Expand Social Security benefits to provide an adequate retirement.

Akshi, Zara, and Ella were part of a 20 person delegation that competed at the West End Secondary School in Manhattan on Saturday, May 18th. In addition to the Championship team, 7th graders Robbie G., Jad B., James P., James G., Sam S., Spencer O., Harper K., Jake C., Charlotte F., Sofia D., Enrique R., Tommy T., and 6th graders Vivek M., Nina Z., Angela C., Aran B., and Sejal V., conducted 5 rounds of debate on such diverse topics as Eliminating Farm Subsidies, the merits of Facial Recognition software, and introducing a 6-year Presidential term. Tommy T. was the top speaker from Hackley and 4th overall in a field of over 120 MS students.

These debaters were among the 40 plus who competed in MS tournaments this year. They work hard prepping for multiple topics to debate in 5 tournaments over the course of the academic year and many go onto to attend summer debate camps and compete in HS debate. Congratulations to all the MS debaters on another successful season of debate.
