Hackley Boys Varsity Tennis 2019

Boys Varsity Tennis opened its season with the same starting lineup as in 2018 season, with the hope of adding a player or two from the promising group of freshman. By season's end, the team advanced in the standings above last year, finishing fifth.
During the long week pre-season trip to Key Biscayne, every player's game rose to the level usually reached by midpoint of the season, and the team was stronger than the previous year. Anthony Johnson '19 started at 1st Singles, with Jared Tilliss '20 at 2nd Singles, and Ethan Yablon '20 at 3rd. Doubles teams were Ben Kirsch '21 and Rami Sumaida '19 at 1st Doubles and, at 2nd, Tucker Wilke '19 and Tony Pizzolato '21. Arav Misra '21, Nico Butterfield '19, Max Rosenblum '20, Tanner Benedetto '22 and Theo Saujet '22 were the reserve.

The schedule challenged the team with early matches against the league's strongest teams, and the record quickly jumped to 0-3. However, the team felt good about their play and confident about improving on last year's  sixth place finish. After first few matches, it became clear that Ethan's aggressive game would be better suited in doubles and Tucker Wilke moved to 3rd singles, a spot he held the season before. Ethan Yablon joined Ben Kirsch creating a successful doubles team that would qualify to NYSAIS tournament at the end of the season. Rami Sumaida and Tony Pizzolato played second doubles. Few minor injuries and absences gave Tanner a chance to play at 3rd singles in fee matches. After finally, overcoming his injuries Arav Misra showed us doubles play we were counting on and he replaced Tony as Rami's partner at the later stage of the season.

With most of the team returning next year, the coaches are optimistic about ongoing growth.
