Come Support Hudson Scholars on Saturday, 7/27

Saturday, July 27th, the Hudson Scholars program will run three exciting Service-Learning projects based in Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow. Please stop by, say hi, join in, buy some lemonade or cheer on our Scholars, Hudson Scholars faculty and amazing Upper School Mentors.
Sixth grade Scholars will offer a series of free, sustainability-based art projects for the younger visitors to TaSH (the Farmer’s Market in Patriot’s Park in Tarrytown). The Scholars hope to raise awareness and encourage environmentalism by installing a “litter sculpture” (from litter collected at Patriot’s Park), creating planters from recycled plastic containers and producing portraits from natural materials (flowers, leaves, sticks, pine cones, etc.). The activities run from 10AM-2PM near the playground area at TaSH.

Seventh grade Scholars will sell lemonade in various locations in Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown. The stands will be set up outside of the Sleepy Hollow Fire Station on Beekman Avenue, the Walgreens’ shopping center near the train station, Main Street Sweets, and the Warner Library on Broadway. The curriculum has focused on teamwork, community leadership, entrepreneurship, and basic financial literacy. All the profits from the day will be donated to Neighbors Link, a cause that the Scholars identified as an organization they would like to support. The stands will be open for business from 11AM-1PM.

Eighth grade Scholars will carry out an exercise in Collaborative Ethnography as they collect anecdotal and observational information about the changes in our towns from residents and business owners. This summer they have had the opportunity to interview both Mayor Fixell (Tarrytown) and Mayor Wray (Sleepy Hollow) about current village issues. The objective of this field-work is to deepen their knowledge of the connections, or disconnections, between the lived-experience of citizens, public policy and laws in order to generate letters to these two public officials. If you are a resident or Tarrytown or Sleepy Hollow, please feel free to volunteer to participate in their project from 11AM-1PM.

Thanks so much in advance for supporting the Hudson Scholars program!
