First Middle School Debate Event of the Season

On Saturday, October 5th, 20 MS debaters, including 10 brand new 5th graders, attended the novice scrimmage at the West End Secondary school to kick off the 2019-20 MS debate season. Over 90 debaters from 10 schools engaged in workshops, training sessions, and two rounds of practice debate on the topic “Schools should be year-round.”

The 5th graders included Layla K., Lily H., Isabella Z., David G., Zach W., Alex W., Jonah G., Avish C., Rani B., and Valentina C., as well as 6th graders Justin D., Riyaan R., Dylan G., Anika D., Inkosi B., and Ben I. 8th grader Indira B. and 7th grader Gabrielle D. rounded out the group.

Three Hackley debaters, 7th graders Ignacio C. and Jad B., and 8th grader Harper K., took part in an exhibition debate in front of the entire audience to demonstrate key debating skills. Hackley US students Neil Singh, Kiri Fitzpatrick, Amy Kliatchko, and Arushi Chandra helped with judging and organizing the event for the day.

The first regular season tournament is scheduled for November 2nd and if Saturday is any indication, we look to have a record number of participants!
