Learning about Sustainable Farming

On October 18, students in Hackley’s Upper School Course “Food and Power: The Science and Politics Behind What we Eat” visited Stone Barns Center For Food and Agriculture.

There they toured the farm with Food Ed staff and learned about sustainable farming. Topics addressed included soil health, crop rotation, farm ecosystems, composting, seed saving, native crops and plant diversity. Students also worked together to cook a meal using ingredients harvested from the farm.

The visit was part of an ongoing partnership between Hackley and Stone Barns that has included visits to Hackley by Stone Barns educators and the training of Hackley faculty by Stone Barns staff.

The Food and Power course, now in its first year, challenges students to think deeply about their own personal and cultural connections to food, the close relationship between food and the environment, as well as who and what determines food availability.
