MS Debaters Compete in Two Tournaments

On Saturday, November 2nd, 38 MS debaters attended two separate debate tournaments in Manhattan for our first MS debate tournament of the season.

The team is stacked with younger debaters this season with a record number of teams in 5th grade. Nevertheless, our debaters held their own against other strong programs and our 8th grade team of Robbie G. and Jad B. brought home the 1st place trophy as the top team at the tournament at Speyer Legacy school. Jad also earned his 1st gavel as the top overall speaker out of more than 120 debaters, an outstanding accomplishment.

Harper K. earned 7th place and was the top speaker for Hackley at the West End Secondary school where our debaters were treated to the experience of having legendary Chess champion Gary Kasparov as one of their judges as a parent for a debater on another school.

8th graders Spencer O., Sofia D., Tommy T., Jake C., Charlotte F. all had winning records. Other MS students who competed included Lily H., Leyla K-H., Isabella Z., Nina Z., Vivek M., Angela C., Dylan F., Rafael C., Valentina C. Rani B., Arjun V. Sejal V., Zizi D., Arya G., Brian F., Shikhar M., Philip I., Julian M., Zach W., Alex W., Charlie N., Jonah G., Ben I., Annie S., Riyaan R., Justin D., Dylan G, and Avish C.

A big thanks to Rishika Jain for chaperoning her first tournament and Neil Singh for running tab as well as all our student and parent judges.

The next tournament is on December 7th, 2019.
