Computer Science Education Week on the Hilltop

The Hackley Computer Science Department once again celebrated Computer Science Education week on the Hilltop. Annually scheduled during the first week of December, CS Ed Week is a program dedicated to inspiring K-12 students to become involved in the study of computer science.

Originally conceived by the Computing in the Core coalition, it is now sponsored by Code.org®, an organization founded by Hackley Alums Hadi and Ali Partovi. Code.org has lead an unprecedented drive to bring computer science to education. More than 42 million students and more than 1 million teachers are part of the Code.org community. Through its annual Hour of Code event during CS Ed Week, Code.org has involved more than 800 million students across the globe. Each year the Hackley computer science teachers and students look forward to participating as part of this national program.

On the Hilltop our celebration involved all facets of our program. During the week, all lower school students explored and worked with the tutorials, games and challenges developed for their age group by Code.org. As a special treat, our upper school AP Computer Science students visited our lower school and worked with kindergarten student-buddies introducing Hackley’s youngest to computer programming. We hosted a two-day interactive display in the Grille Room featuring games, programs, mini-robots, and apps, all created and coded by Hackley students. This year, our celebration was expanded to also feature The Hackery, Hackley’s makerspace. In the Hackery visitors can interact with projects designed and created by students featuring early robotics projects by Computer 8 and 3D design work by our Design Thinking, Applied Programming, and Fabrication course. Additionally this week, we hosted a guest speaker, Mr. Paul Pizzolato P’21, who spoke with our upper school computer science students about the need for programming and scripting skills in his workplace as well as globally.
