Hackley Varsity Fencing 2019-20

Hackley Fencing finished an exceptional season, ending with a first-ever 1st Place in the ISFL League and at the Team Championship in all three boy's weapons.


We would like to gratefully acknowledge the seven seniors who have given their skills, time and leadership to the team: Rebecca Steinberg (cap.), Sam Perlman (Capt.), James DiStefano, Kathryn Fernholz, Paola Garcia, Ying Ku, and Alexander Kyimpopkin our honorary senior.

The Hackley Fencing Team competes in the Independent School Fencing League (ISFL) which now includes Avenues, Chapin, Hackley, Horace Mann, LREI, Marymount, Masters School, Riverdale Country School, Rye Country Day School, and St. Ann’s.

Girl’s Foil finished 3rd in the League with a record of 8-5. Jessye Salmon (‘22) led the squad with a 22-11 season record for 9th in the League and took 6th place at The League Individual Championship. Tabitha Jones (’23) had a 20-3 season record finishing 12th in the League. She took 12th at The League Individual Championship. Afsana Dahli (’23) had a 6-27 season record. She finished 18th at The League Individual Championship.

Boy’s Foil finished 1st in the League with 11-0 record and they finished 1st at the Team League Championships. This was their second consecutive undefeated season in the League and at The League Team Championship. This was the best season for the Boys Varsity Foil Team in Hackley history, surpassing last year’s results.

The team was led by Maxwel Lee (‘22), with a season record of 25-1, 1st place in the League; Max Bryant (‘21) with a 25-2 season record took 2nd place in the league; and Max Calman (’22 ) with a 25-2 season record took 3rd place in the league. All three were 1st Team All-League. Additionally, Max Bryant was 2nd, Maxwel Lee 3rd and Max Calman 6th at the League Individual Championship. Zack Couzens ’21 returned this season with a 6-3 record, and John Rotchchild ’23 made his varsity debut going 2-4 as did Daniel Shola-Philips ’23 going 0-2.

Girl’s Epee finished 8th in the League with a 1-11 record and placed 8th at the Team Championship. Paola Garcia (’20) had a 6-21 season record. Esther Choi (’23) had a 5-26 record. Sarah Malach (’23) finished with a 2-26 record. Becky Steinberg of the saber team had a 4-0 record as a sub. Kathryn Fernholz (’20) could not compete most this season due to injuries.

Boy’s Epee finished 1st in the League with a 10-1 record and placed 3rd at the Team League Championship. This was the best year for the Boy’s Epee Team Individual performances in Hackley history. The team was led by Sam Perlmen (’20), who took 1st place season in the League with a record of 29-3. Sam placed 7th at the League Individual Championship. James DiStefano (’20) placed 2nd in the League season rankings with a 24-5 record and took 1st at the League Individual Championship. Both Sam and James were 1st Team All-League. Henry Beyrich (’22) finished 6th in League with a 20-8 record and took home 3rd at the League Individual Championship. Henry was 2nd Team All- League. Rounding out the team were Daniel Rivera (’21), Daniel Shola-Philips (’23) and Jaden Bayrooti (’23).

Girl’s Saber placed 3rd this season with an 8-2 record. Julia Magliato (’23) led the team with a 20-5 season record placing her 2nd in League standings. She took 2nd place at the League Individual Championship and is on the First Team All-League. Becky Steinberg (‘20) had a 16-8 season finishing 6th in League standings. She placed 6th at the League Individual Championship and is on the Second Team All-League. Regan Begley (’23) could not compete most this season due to injuries.

Boy’s Saber finished 1st in the League with an 8-2 record and won the Team League Championship. This was the best season for Boy’s Saber in Hackley history. Leading the squad was Nicky Wind (’22) posting a 19-2 season record for 1st place in League Standings. Nicky won the League Individual Championship. Sam Sanders (’24) a first year 8th grade fencer finished with a 21-6 record for 4th place in League standings. He took 2nd place at the League Individual Championship. At the League Individual Championship. Sid Shan (‘22) took 5th, Arjan Sandhu (’23) 8th and Alexander Kyimpopkim (’21) 9th.
