Hackley Girls Varsity Basketball 2019-20

The Hackley Girls Varsity Basketball Team ended the season with an overall record of 12-12 and an Ivy League record of 7-5, good for third place. The girls earned the #9 seed in the NYSAIS state tournament where they won their first round game before losing to the #1 seed and eventual NYSAIS Champions Horace Mann.

The team was led by captains Jenny Canoni '20, Sofia Graziano '20, Shira Meer ’21 and Dylan Wade '20. Their leadership ensured that each member of the team, and the team overall, improved week to week.

One of this year’s highlights was an overtime, come from behind win versus our cross-town rival Rye Country Day School. Sofia Graziano and Sophia Petriello ’23 lead all scorers with 20 points each, while Ashley Morgner ’22 added 12 including a clutch 5 of 6 from the foul line in overtime.

Another highlight worth a noting was the team’s 59-46 win versus Woodlands, a public school. Sofia Graziano tallied a season high 31 points while Sophia Petriello finished with 11.

This year’s team was hard working energetic and fun to coach. Sofia Graziano led the offense averaging 18 points per game as well as nine rebounds per game. Jenny Canoni and Isabella Monteleone '21 took care of the boards all season. Sophia Petriello made significant offensive contributions as well averaging eight points per game while leading the team in charges. Annabel Ives ’20 was an offensive spark at times hitting timely 3-pointers and took five charges in one game. Dylan Wade was counted on to run the point as well as shoot the 3’s when needed. Shira Meer made her long awaited return mid-January after a 15 month rehab. Ashley Morgner ran the point and was clutch with her free throw shooting. Julia Thomson ’20 improved throughout the season and made steady contributions as well. Lotte Steinert ’23 worked hard, improved and had three blocks in one game. Our 8th grader, Ashley Currie, saw playing time and will be looked upon to be one of our top scorers in the years to come. Phoebe Naughton ’22 showed great improvement as the season progressed, was difficult to guard due to her speed, and was counted on to be a defensive stopper at the end of the season.

Everyone contributed in their own way helping make this a memorable season for all. We will miss our seniors but also look forward to a bright future for the program.
