Hackley Debate Teams love October!

October has been a busy month for Hackley debaters. The debate teams competed at Bronx Science, Byram Hills, and the Connecticut Debate Association Tournaments.

On Friday, Oct. 16 through Sunday, Oct 18, members of the US Public Forum team competed at the Bronx High School of Science tournament and debated the resolution “Resolved: The United States federal government should enact the Medicare-For-All Act of 2019." Sophomore Zara Yusaf and junior Zach Yusaf made it all the way to the final round and were declared co-champions in varsity Public Forum, earning a full bid to the prestigious Tournament of Champions! Also in the varsity division, Senior Ben Aybar and junior Sid Shah won three rounds, and in junior varsity, sophomore Kevin Kim and junior Daniel Cai also won three rounds.

On Saturday, October 10, three teams competed in the open division at the Byram Hills tournament, debating the same resolution above. Zara Yusaf and junior Michael Lee won 2 of their rounds. Sophomores Jaan Rothschild, Kirsten Trivell, and ninth graders Phoebe Abrahms and Sam Sanders each won a round as well.

On the parliamentary side, freshman Jad Benslimane and Spencer Ormsby competed in the 1st Connecticut Debate Association tournament of the season, earning a 2-1 record on the topic “Resolved: The US should treat Chinese and US social media companies equally.” On Saturday and Sunday, sophomore Arushi Chandra and freshman Harper Kelsey competed in the 1st New York Parliamentary Debate league tournament of the season, participating in 5 rounds of impromptu Parliamentary debate. They were 4-1 which was good enough to make it to elimination rounds on Sunday morning.

Congratulations, debaters!
