Metika Ngbokoli ’11 virtually visits Hackley’s ISRP Students

Hackley’s Independent Research Program had the pleasure of hosting Metika Ngbokoli ’11 on Monday, December 7, where she discussed her incredibly inspiring path in being a first generation college student to now a 4th year PhD student in the Behavioral and Integrative Neuroscience Program at the UNC.

As she described it, all of it also required the encouragement and support of key people in her life.  That lesson really hit home with our students, as one student reflected: “I think her takeaways of being your own cheerleader, not being afraid to ask for help and find people in our corner relates to junior year as much as it does to college.”  Another student said, “I enjoyed listening to Metika, specifically because of how her story converged a natural passion for neuroscience with numerous challenges from stages of her life, in high school and beyond. Metika mentioned that she had no experience with neuroscience and psychology, yet … contemplated the nature of a single person’s thought process. Science was a way of unlocking the answers to those questions and exploring her curiosity.”  Thank you Metika for coming to visit our budding scientists!

All alumni/parents with present or past experiences in scientific research have a standing invitation to back and visit the Independent Research Program. Our future scientists love hearing your stories, and these talks are formative for their careers. If you are interested, please reach out to Dr. Andrew Ying (aying@hackleyschool.org).
