Jewish Culture Club Invites Speakers to Honor International Holocaust Remembrance Day

On January 12, in anticipation of International Holocaust Remembrance Day on January 27th which commemorates the day Auschwitz was liberated in 1945, Emma Joseph, Sophie Miller, Michael Lee, and Meredith Greenberg — the student leadership of Hackley’s Jewish Culture Club — invited three speakers from the American Jewish Committee (AJC) to talk to the Upper School over Zoom.

Harriet Schleifer, the national president of the AJC,  joined Lili Platt, and Leah Wolinetz, two other active members of the AJC, to share their families’ experiences in the Holocaust. Each presented stories of the loss of family members,  their parents’ survival, and their experiences reestablishing themselves in the United States. They also spoke about their hopes for what students could learn from their experiences.

The historical overview provided by the students combined powerfully with the personal stories of the three guests, embracing the United Nation’s goal behind the 27th’s designation, that every member state “honor the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust and millions of other victims of Nazism and to develop educational programs to help prevent future genocides.” (from the American Holocaust Museum website)
