Senior Artists of the Week: 1/29/21

The Visual and Performing Arts Departments celebrate the Class of 2021 through the Senior Artists of the Week series honoring Hackley’s graduating artists.

Visual Arts

Sarah Chang '21
Over the last several decades in the senior studio, some of the strongest and boldest portfolios have been created with the least fanfare and fuss. Sarah Chang’s senior portfolio ranks among the best. Long a quiet force in our studios, Sarah has worked with steady focus over the years to build her knowledge, skills, and her confidence—to become one of Hackley’s strongest drawers. Sarah tackles virtually any subject with ease and precision—in fact, the more challenging the subject, the more interested Sarah is to take it on! For her AP Studio Art sustained investigation portfolio, Sarah is creating a series of charcoal and chalk pastel drawings that blend marine and floral forms. Richly toned and textured, and meticulously observed and executed, her drawings have been universally praised and admired by the entire AP group. Keep an eye out for her most recent efforts: wonderfully lyrical and hushed images of one of the most lethal creatures on the planet: the box jellyfish!

Visual and Performing Arts

David Bernstein '21

David Bernstein is a true artist, having been a consistent and essential contributor to multiple Hackley dramatic, visual, and musical arts groups. Since Lower School, David has been a devoted member of Hackley's Orchestra program. As a violinist, he always brings creativity, enthusiasm, and a positive work ethic to all rehearsals and concerts. David is also passionate about photography and has been producing strong work based on his observations and sensitivity. He is currently producing an AP portfolio with a concentration theme of abandonment, and likes to keep these photo images black and white in order to accentuate the idea of the past.

As a founding member of the Musical Theater Workshop class, David has been committed to bringing the musical back to Hackley. He is a dedicated performer on stage, willing to help other actors, and consistently seeks to gain understanding of the dramatic process off stage.  To say that David is well-versed in cinematic language and techniques would be an understatement. A mainstay in Hackley’s filmmaking program, David produced over 15 short films in less than three years in the Upper School. With each new film, David has expanded his cinematic techniques by experimenting with unusual camera angles, lighting effects, and editing transitions. (Watch Jane, a film by David.)

His many teachers in both the visual and performing arts programs recognize and appreciate his talents and his contributions to the arts throughout his Hackley career.
