Senior Artists of the Week: 2/5/21

The Visual and Performing Arts Departments celebrate the Class of 2021 through the Senior Artists of the Week series honoring Hackley’s graduating artists.

Performing Arts

Sarah Shapiro '21
Involved with performing arts throughout her years at Hackley, Sarah is a multi-discipline performing artist. In middle and upper school she played the clarinet in band and in various chamber groups. Sarah is a founding member of the Musical Theater Workshop class. Her commitment to musical theater extends beyond the stage with her regular advocacy for the Hackley program. She has performed a slate of roles from the shy competitive speller in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee to the powerful witch in Into the Woods. Sarah is always willing to support others in rehearsals and is a knowledgeable and committed artist. She is appreciated and valued for her love for music and drama, and for her contributions to the performing arts at Hackley.

Visual Arts

Deeya Patel '21
Deeya never fails to surprise and amaze in the studio! She arrives to class day after day, month after month, with the same laser focus and quiet determination, ready to tackle the next visual challenge, and to push her portfolio ever further forward. She is simply one of the hardest working and more serious artists in our program: always putting her best foot forward in her drawings, and sparing no time or effort to develop and refine her ideas and technical skills. As such, Deya has been a steady inspiration in our program for years now, and an outstanding example to her peers. Hackley’s visual arts program is defined in part by an ethos of hard work and commitment to craftsmanship; Deeya has been instrumental in both cultivating and sustaining that ethos these past many years. For her AP Studio Art portfolio, she is developing a series of drawings that both explore and celebrate the tradition of Indian dance. Carefully observed, cleverly composed, and beautifully executed in charcoal and pastel, her images are some of the most impressive drawings being produced in the senior studio this year!
