Andrew Carnabucci '02 Publishes Two Books
Andrew Carnabuci ’02, an associate attorney at Rose Kallor LLP in Hartford, CT, has published two books: Beowulf: A Verse Translation from the Anglo-Saxon and The Sole Palladium: An Apologia for Free Speech in the United States. He donated copies to the Hackley Collection (books written by alumni) in the school’s Sternberg Library.
The books included the following inscriptions:
Beowulf – “To the Hackley student who has found this book: Welcome, my friend, to my translation of Beowulf! When I first read this poem, in Dr. Robinson’s 10th Grade English class in this very building, the possibility that someday my own translation might end up in the Hackley library was quite simply beyond the outermost boundaries of my own imagination. But, life takes you in interesting and unforeseen directions, and sometimes the bane of your existence when you were 16 becomes your life’s work in your 30s. May this book specifically, and your Hackley education generally, take you, too, on many interesting intellectual journeys in unforeseen directions. Gaeo a wyrd swa hio scel!”
The Sole Palladium: An Apologia for Free Speech in the United States – “To the Hackley student who has found this book: Welcome, my friend, to my book! I wrote this monograph on free speech as a side-project during law school, but you must have no doubt that whatever virtues you may find it possess are attributable to the doctrines and skills I learned here, at Hackley, in this very building. If you were looking for a book that provides a succinct but relatively comprehensive gloss of free speech, and a forceful argument in favour of the same, I believe you will find here what you seek.”
Andrew is fluent in Old English, and has engaged in extensive literary scholarship in the field of Old English and Anglo-Saxon literature. He is a Fellow at the International Society of Anglo-Saxonists. He was accepted as a member of the Royal Society of Literature (London, U.K.).
