We are thrilled to announce that Hackley’s Senior Ethics Bowl Team—Kiri Fitzpatrick, Lily Napach, Charlie Rudge, and Sophie Thomas—navigated a stunning series of victories at the National High School Ethics Bowl Championship, held via Zoom and sponsored by the Parr Center for Ethics at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. 290 schools competed this year in 41 regional competitions, with the culminating National Championship tournament having taken place last weekend from April 9-11, 2021.

We are immensely proud to let you know that Hackley’s students took third place in the nation!  Additionally, only four teams were recognized with the Mark Sanders Prize for Excellence in Ethics by the Parr Center on April 12—Hackley’s team stands among them.

We simply could not be more proud of these students. The goal of Ethics Bowl is to demonstrate philosophical nuance, suppleness, and insight when grappling with complex ethical dilemmas, to enter into genuine civil discourse and dialogue with the opposing team, and to make cogent claims about cases that speak to the moral core of the human condition. Kiri, Lily, Charlie, and Sophie were spectacular in all these respects. They demonstrated time and again during the competition that, though character is indeed higher than intellect, having both isn’t a bad thing either!
