Capitol Hill Journalist Marc Rod ’16 visits Hackley Dial students

(By Dial Editor Kami Lim '22) -- Marc Rod, class of ’16, visited the Dial class via Zoom on Friday, May 7 to speak to students about his experiences as a current journalist and former co-editor in chief of the Dial. His talk was part of a celebration to honor the outgoing senior class (class of ’21) and to thank them for their work on the publication.

While at Pomona College, Marc wrote for the Claremont consortium’s student newspaper, The Student Life, and served as Managing Editor during his senior year. Additionally, he worked as an intern for the Claremont Courier, CNN, MSNBC, and the Jewish Insider. Following his graduation in 2020, Marc accepted a job at the Jewish Insider and moved to D.C. He currently holds a Capitol Hill press pass and reports on all breaking news, and frequently interviews members of Congress. On January 6th he was present in Congress, reporting on the certification of the election when protesters entered the building. He shared this first-hand experience and photos from that day with the Dial class, relaying both his fear and thankfulness about being able to report from inside the Capitol on that day.

The class had time to ask questions about his experiences on Capitol Hill, working on another school publication, and why he chose to become a journalist. He explained that while he did not major in journalism in college, he felt a clear calling to journalism. He knew he wanted to be a part of the movement toward clear, nonpartisan news. His interest in politics and international affairs combined well with his career in journalism, beginning with the Dial. His virtual visit back to the hilltop to speak with the class allowed students an insight into the work of a journalist and its intersection with other topics in which students are interested.
