Upper School Debate Teams Update

The Upper School Debate Teams have competed in their first three tournaments of the season. At the Yale University Invitational Tournament, one Hackley team came in 15th out of 93 entries.
 
In Parliamentary debate, the following students competed at the Yale University Invitational Tournament: Mason Napach ‘23, Harper Kelsey ‘24, Arushi Chandra ‘23, Catherine Lapey ‘22, Thomas Troso ‘24, Jad Benslimane ‘24, Spencer Ormsby ‘24, and Charlotte Feehan ‘24. Co-captains Mason and Catherine won four out of five rounds and qualified for octofinals, losing in the first elimination round but ending up as the 15th team overall out of 93 entries. Harper and Arushi won three rounds! 

In Varsity Public Forum, Hackley students competed at two tournaments where they debated the resolution, “Resolved: The North Atlantic Treaty Organization should increase its defense commitments to the Baltic states.” At the National Speech and Debate Association Season Opener Tournament, hosted virtually by the University of Kentucky, seniors Sid Shah ‘22 and Sydney DeFilippo ‘22 won four rounds in prelims and advanced to triple octofinals. Senior Zach Yusaf ‘22 and junior Zara Yusaf ‘23 won four rounds in prelims and advanced to octofinals, earning a bid to the prestigious Tournament of Champions. Both teams also competed at the Yale Invitational. Zach and Zara were undefeated in all six preliminary rounds and advanced to triple octofinals.
