Athletics Highlights #1

The Athletics Department is pleased to launch a new weekly series featuring Athletes of the Week, team reports, and other Hornet updates.

Athletes of the Week

Gabriella Petriello ’26, Girls’ Varsity Soccer: Gabby had two goals and an assist in her first varsity game on the Hilltop against rival school Holy Child on September 9. In addition, Gabby has been a presence in all three of the teams' wins starting at the forward position. Gabby is a welcome addition to a great team that has started the season 3-0.

Michael Abbey ’23, Boys’ Varsity Soccer: Michael scored the first two goals in the Hornets game against Browning at Fall Sting. Michael headed in a corner kick at minute 7:20 of the first half and then followed up with another goal 12 minutes later to give Hackley a 2-0 lead on their way to a 5-0 win. Michael is a vital part of the team’s 4-0 record to start the season.

Team Report

Hackley BVS Starts Season 4-0: The Boys’ Varsity Soccer Team has returned to competitive play for the first time in almost two years and they are making the most of it. With a solid group of returning players and some fresh faces, BVS has stayed unbeaten through four games, and in doing so only conceded two goals. A 6-1 win in their opener over the French American School of NY helped get the ball rolling. Next was a less impressively played 3-1 win over a scrappy Portledge squad, coming back from a 0-1 deficit on the road. Browning was the next BVS victim where the Hornets netted five goals and kept a clean sheet.

A return to Ivy League play this past Monday saw a strengthened Dalton squad come to the Hilltop, fresh off a 1-1 tie with Riverdale. With Hackley down three key starters, the Hornets dug deep and found a way to score twice in the second half and keep Dalton off the scoreboard. It has been a positive start for the team as they get set to jump feet-first into the exceedingly competitive Ivy League schedule.
