Athletics Highlights #11

This week's Highlights feature a "Spotlight" of the Wrestling team and six new "Athletes of the Week."

Athletes of the Week

Shiraz Awan ’23, Boys' Squash: Shiraz is currently 7-1 on the season playing in the 3 or 4 position in the line for many matches. His contributions have helped lead the team to an undefeated record in the Ivy League.

John Churchill ’23, Wrestling: John went 5-0 at the Martin Luther Tournament on January 22 to claim first in his weight class. John has been a vital member of the wrestling program this season.  

Brendan DiStefano ’23, Cross Country: Brendan, the boys’ senior captain, had the race of his life at the New Balance Games on January 22. In a field of over 100 runners, including several state-ranked runners, Brendan dominated, placing first. Brendan’s time of 9:41.98 was the fastest 2-mile time of his running career. This blistering fast time qualified Brendan for the New Balance Nationals at the end of the season. 

Dylan Ormsby ’22, Track and Field: Dylan won the triple jump at the Ivy League Prep Schools #5 with a new personal best jump of 39'1.25". Dylan also had a personal best in the 300m and helped our 4x200m relay to a second-place finish in blazing time.


Jessye Salmon ’22, Fencing:  Jessye is currently 8-1 on the season for the girls’ foil team. In her last three matches, she had an incredible record of 45-11.  

Eve Spencer ’23, Cross Country: Eve, the girls’ senior captain, ran the fastest 1500m she has ever run with an incredible time of 5:14.36, a seven-second improvement on her previous PR. This placed Eve sixth overall among the fastest private school runners in the state. 

Wrestling Spotlight
The Hackley Wrestling Team placed third at the Martin Luther School’s 47th Annual Invitational Wrestling Tournament on Saturday, January 22. Cole Joseph ‘23 was named Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament with 3 pins and 6 takedowns. Hackley crowned three tournament champions: Harper Kelsey ‘24, Cole Joseph ‘23, and John Churchill ’23 who each were first in their weight class. 

The NYSAIS Wrestling Championships will be held at Hackley School on Saturday, February 12 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  Sorry, no spectators will be allowed.
