Service Leadership for Social Impact and English 12 team up to combat Period Poverty

On Friday, February 11, the upper school’s Service Leadership for Social Impact and English 12 classes continued their partnership with 914Cares and their work addressing Period Poverty in our local community.

Using the resources and monies collected during December’s “Hack Gives Back” campaign, the students hosted a “flow kit” packing party to provide period products to menstruating people in Westchester County who do not have access to these essential resources.

Each flow kit contains a month’s supply of period products. The students packed 596 kits, surpassing 914cares’s monthly distribution to its 80+ community partners.

This deeply impactful project raised awareness around issues of Period Poverty, provided an important opportunity for our students to engage in meaningful and far-reaching service to the community, and also allowed for meaningful exchange with Hackley's school partners in Rwanda. The students are sharing reflections and videos about their learning experience to students at the Duha Complex School via the Rwanda Education Assistance Project (REAP). Hackley students have been able to compare their Westchester-based period poverty initiative with the service-learning efforts of the students in Rwanda, thereby making their learning both local and global!
