Boys’ Varsity Soccer Rebounds with 5-1 Win Over Horace Mann
The Boys’ Varsity Soccer team got back in the win column after a tough loss at Fieldston on Saturday afternoon, their first loss of the year. The Hornets took out their frustration on Horace Mann by scoring early and often in a 5-1 drubbing of the Lions on the road.
It was an important win for the Hornets to prevent any kind of mid-season skid, and also a way to stay near the top of the league table with Horace Mann only one sport below them going into the game. Hackley currently stands in second place, one point behind Riverdale, but with a game in hand.
It was clear early on this was a different Hackley team from the one that lost Saturday. The boys’ technical skill was high, their energy level up, and their ball movement strong. The Hornets were dominating possession and second balls, while also looking dangerous from the get-go. Less than 4 minutes (3:48) into the game, Andrew Carpenito ’26 had a Lion clearance bounce off him into the goal for a 1-0 lead. Caleb Bae ’24 added a second at 8:20 off another well-served corner from captain JT Goswami ’23.
The Hornets were off to the races and continued to generate good scoring chances, including a potential handball PK that went uncalled and a rebound off the post. Hackley eventually was rewarded with a third first half goal when Cliff Chapman ’24 banged home an errant clearance off another JT corner kick. Goalkeeper John Churchill ’23 made a spectacular save late in the half to preserve a 3-0 lead.

The second half saw more of the same Hackley dominance in possession and chances, including another post. Dan Paridis ’23 got in on the action 15 minutes into the half, scoring his eighth goal of the year. Philip Mahamedi ’25 got his first varsity goal 10 minutes from the final whistle. The only blemish on the score sheet came with 8 minutes to play, when Horace Mann was awarded a dubious penalty kick. John had no chance on the well-taken PK, but the game was in hand by then and ended 5-1 with a steady rain falling.
It was a good rebound win, which should put a little wind in the Hornet’s sails as they march toward the second half of the season. Their record now stands at 7-1 overall. The boys return to action on Friday, Oct. 7, when they face Trinity for the first time this year. While scores suggest Trinity is down a bit from last year, they are always a tough out and will require a complete effort and focus to secure a win.
