Athletes of the Week – Week of Oct. 17

Girls’ Varsity Soccer: Sophia Petriello ’23
Sophia lead the HGVS defense in their 3-0 victory over reigning NYSAIS champions Fieldston last week in the annual Dave Allison Memorial game. The shutout was the team’s fourth of the season. Sophia has been tenacious on defense, often shutting down the opposing attackers. She also starts the attack with her long throw-in plays, which enable her teammates to have multiple scoring opportunities.

Varsity Field Hockey: Gabi Kalapoutis ’23
Gabi scored two goals and one assist in the Hornets’ last three games, including an exciting breakaway goal in the team’s Rye Country Day game. All three of these games were close, and Gabi’s play was integral to the team’s success. Gabi has also been dynamic on defense, causing multiple turnovers, leading to offensive opportunities. Her leadership and dependability on and off the field have been instrumental to the success of the field hockey team’s season to date and will be integral to helping the team achieve the goals it has set in the end of the season.
