Hackley Outlasts Fieldston in Penalty Kicks, Nabs NYSAIS Title

Hackley Boys’ Varsity Soccer capped the season with a rare double, winning both the Ivy League regular season title and the NYSAIS championship. The Hornets bested a talented Fieldston squad Monday night on Randall’s Island to secure the win.

Fieldston dominated the first half in possession and chances, and was rewarded when the team scored first at 20:03 with a well-struck ball from the top of the penalty area. Hackley struggled to generate much offense, but the team held strong to keep the score line 1-0.

The Hornets made tactical adjustments that paid dividends early in the second half. Dan Paridis ’23 was pulled down in the box at 36:03 and awarded a penalty kick, which he converted to level the score. Hackley scored again at 31:39, when Cliff Chapman ’24 pounced on a rebound off a Paridis free kick to take the lead.

Fieldston continued to press and got their own penalty kick at 24:20. The score line stayed 2-2 through 20 minutes of overtime and another 10 minutes of sudden death overtime. Hackley converted its first four penalties to secure the victory and the title.

Congratulations to the entire team, but especially the sensational senior class of Michael Abbey, Aidan Aybar, John Churchill, JT Goswami, Cole Joseph, Fritz Lauerwald, Steven Li, Ethan Malik, Max Ngbokoli, Dan Paridis, Massimo Soto, and Reece Weinberger.
