Hackley Debate Duo Wins HSPDP Tournament on the Hilltop

On Saturday, Dec. 10, Hackley hosted the first High School Public Debate Program (HSPDP) regular season tournament of the year. Nine schools and 30 teams participated, debating such issues as the Biden Student Loan Forgiveness program, New York State’s policy banning the sale of gas-powered vehicles in 2035, and whether public transportation should be free.

Hackley was represented by Mason Napach 23, Sam Sanders 24, Phoebe Abrahms 24, Harper Kelsey 24, and Vivek Malik 25. Harper, Vivek, and Phoebe went 3-1, and Sam and Mason—debating as a two-person team—won the tournament with a perfect 4-0 record. Harper was Hackley’s top speaker and the sixth ranked speaker overall. Also observing at the tournament were some dedicated MS debaters trying to pick up some new skills, including Ryan L. 30, Evelyn W. 28, Lila S. 27, Kiran J. 27, and Nico K. 27.

Ted Kelsey (parent of Harper), Arjun Virk 25, Catherine Lapey 22, and Debate Coach Chris Sheppard, also deserve a huge shout out for volunteering their time to the event by serving as judges for the day.

Our next HSPDP tournament will take place on Feb. 11, 2023, at the Dwight School in Manhattan.
