Athletes of the Week – Week of Jan. 30

Every week, the Athletics department highlights some exceptional Hackley Hornets who are helping to spur on their teams.

Wrestling: John Churchill ’23
John has had a great season with a record of 17-3 with 27 takedowns. He was 3-0 last week and placed fifth at the Westchester County Championships the previous week.

Track and Field: Sophie Frazier ’26
Last Wednesday, Sophie had the race of her life. The 1500-meter race featured some of the fastest girls in the state. Sophie raced with confidence and grit, resulting in her placing fourth overall. Her time of 5:06.83 qualified her for freshmen nationals and was only five seconds off the Hackley freshmen 1500m record.

Track and Field: Callie Duggan ’23
This senior leader had a breakout race last Wednesday. She was in an incredibly competitive heat of the 1000m, featuring some of the fastest girls in NYSIAS. Callie made a bold move at the end of the race, which placed her second among 39 runners. Her time of 3:11.19 seeds her as one of the top runners in the league going into championships.

Fencing: Zizi D. '27, Joshua Lee '25, & Inkosi Brou '26
All individual ISFL champions, these three students brought home the gold in their respective weapons (womens' foil, mens' foil, mens' saber) and are titled the best in the Independent School Fencing League. Click here to read more about the ISFL Individual Championship.

Girls' Varsity Basketball: Alex Schiller ’24
In two games last week, Alex averaged 14 points per game with six rebounds. She also had a career-high 17 points in a nail-biter win over Maria Regina in the Coaches vs. Cancer game.
