Hackley Alumnus Returns to Hilltop as ISRP Guest Speaker

The Independent Science Research Program (ISRP) recently had the pleasure of hosting Hackley alumnus Kiegan Lenihan ’15 as a guest speaker. Kiegan is currently working at Carbon3D in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he is applying geometry and mathematics to drastically improve 3-D printing technology.

During his talk, Kiegan engaged our students with thought-provoking questions that allowed them to identify current issues in the technology. He then presented his novel solution, which he hopes to publish soon.

One senior commented, “I think this was the most (personally) interesting guest speaker we had so far!” Another student said, “one of the most interesting and fascinating parts of his talk was when he talked about the efficiency of the method he developed. He said while it would take days or weeks with a traditional algorithm, it now takes 5 seconds. Optimization will always be important, so I found that really cool.”

Kiegan also inspired our students by describing how being new to the field helped him offer varying and useful perspectives that more experienced professionals didn’t have. One student thought, “one really interesting point that stood out to me was when he said that you don’t have to have a lot of experience going into a new role. I think he made a really good example that showed that you can learn from others around you, and also that someone’s lack of experience can give them a separate and less traditionally cultured perspective.”

All alumni and families with present or past experiences in scientific research have a standing invitation to visit the Independent Science Research Program. Our future scientists love hearing your stories, and these talks are formative to their careers. If you are interested, please reach out to Dr. Andrew Ying at aying@hackleyschool.org.
