Upper School Debate Team Dominates HSPDP Championship

Hackley's Upper School Debate Team achieved an unprecedented accomplishment at the Championship for the East Coast High School Public Debate Program (HSPDP) League for the 2022-2023 season on May 6. Hackley was the top team overall with a 100% winning percentage and tied for the most number of wins despite having just three teams in the event.

In a display of exceptional skill and preparation, Hackley teams secured the top three places in the tournament, with all teams finishing undefeated and boasting impressive 4-0 records. Harper Kelsey '24,  Mason Napach '23, and Sam Sanders '24 led the charge, winning the tournament on points, ranking 1st, 2nd, and 3rd speakers, respectively.

Close behind, Spencer Ormsby '24 and Jad Benslimane '24 claimed second place as a dynamic two-person team. Both Jad and Spencer were also recognized with speaker awards in the top 20. Vivek Malik '25, Phoebe Abrahms '24, and Nico K.—an exceptionally dedicated 8th grader—rounded out Hackley's dominance by securing third place. Vivek and Phoebe also nabbed speaker awards in the top 20.

We are incredibly proud of our debaters' achievements and want to extend a heartfelt congratulations to all team members. Their performance in this tournament set a new benchmark for Hackley Upper School's debate legacy.

A special recognition goes out to Harper Kelsey, who not only contributed to the winning team's success, but also earned the prestigious title of top speaker in the tournament. Harper was awarded the coveted "Golden Gavel" for her performance, which is a testament to her exceptional debating skills and persuasive prowess. Congratulations, Harper, on this well-deserved honor! A thank you also goes out to Ted Kelsey, who served as a judge in the event.

The HSPDP Championship concludes the 2022-2023 debate season in spectacular fashion!
