Whether in science, English or history, Hackley students are empowered to think critically, innovate boldly and contribute meaningfully to the world around them.
Our student-researchers present their work each year at Hackley's Annual Research Symposium, which takes place on the Hilltop in late May. Click the button below to read more about their work.
Explore the Possibilities
Founded in 2015, Hackley’s Independent Science Research Program supports and guides students with a passion for science to pursue authentic scientific research. This three-year program bridges the gap between a traditional high school science curriculum and the investigative process behind real-world scientific breakthroughs.
Students begin by building foundational research skills, such as conducting literature reviews, analyzing data and presenting results effectively. Throughout the school year, they receive guidance in identifying and contacting potential mentors at universities, medical institutions or research facilities. These mentorships are central to designing and conducting experiments that bring classroom learning to life.
During the summers following their sophomore and junior years, students collaborate closely with professional scientists in academic, medical or industrial labs to conduct their self-designed experiments. This hands-on research experience allows them to dive into scientific inquiry, gaining insights and skills that prepare them for future academic and professional pursuits.
The program culminates in students submitting their findings to prestigious regional, national and/or international science and engineering fairs, showcasing their innovative work on a broader stage. By nurturing students’ passion for research, Hackley’s ISRP inspires the next generation of scientific leaders.

Hackley’s English and History Departments have long prioritized analytical writing as a focal point of each department’s curricula. In 2019, Hackley expanded its commitment to academic excellence by introducing independent research courses in these departments. These electives, available to juniors and seniors, provide students with the opportunity to conduct advanced research and writing at the undergraduate level under the mentorship of Hackley’s English and History faculty.
Students begin by developing their own research questions, conducting scholarly literature reviews, and applying research methodologies tailored to their topics. In addition to the final project, some of our students have connected with outside scholars with expertise in their chosen research area to gain additional support for their research.
The program emphasizes ethical and effective use of generative AI as a tool in the research process, equipping students with critical 21st-century skills. These courses develop core skills in critical thinking, advanced writing and independent inquiry — essential for success in college and beyond.
