Hackley School

Hackley students took part in the Westchester Regional Tournament of the National High School Ethics Bowl on Saturday, Jan. 31, at Sacred Heart Greenwich. The competition is organized by the Parr Center for Ethics at the University of North Carolina. Eleven students, representing two teams competed against more than a dozen schools for an opportunity to advance to the National Championship. After three preliminary rounds, one of Hackley’s teams was among the top four and advanced to the semifinals. James Devereux ’26, Beatrix Mackil ’27, Peter Park ’27, Shreyas Kuniyil ’28 and William Sevilla ’28 defeated the reigning champions, Regis, before losing an incredibly tight match against Holy Child in the final.

Ethics Bowl, unlike debate, is an opportunity for teams to showcase nuanced analysis of complex ethical issues raised in the cases students receive a few months ahead of time. Instead of trying to “defeat” an opponent in an argument, points are awarded based on how well each team demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of ethical dilemmas, especially in response to questioning from the judges.

This year’s team was led by senior Sarah Rotenberg, and Hackley hopes to welcome even more members next year. Rounding out the squad were returning members Peter King ’26, Macey McLane ’26 and Charlie Napach ’27, and newcomers Nikhil Shah ’26 and Ella Ferrari ’27.
